A developer proposed to build a restaurant in the sea just off Mothers' Beach, at the east side of Mornington Harbour, in 1983.

A campaign to save Mothers' Beach, by Port Phillip Conservation Council Inc, was greatly assisted by a union ban on installing windows in the restaurant, placed by the Federated Furnishing Trades Society of Australasia.

The then Labor Minister for Conservation, Forests and Lands, Hon. Rod McKenzie MLC, agreed with PPCC's request to reject the proposal for what would have been a degrading exploitation of the family-friendly seaside qualities of the appropriately-named Mothers' Beach.

The Mornington Yacht Club's proposal for a large marina in Mornington Harbour in 1991, involving jam-packed, wall-to-wall boats and car parking space, was successfully opposed, when the then Liberal Planning Minister, Hon. Robert Maclellan MLA, rejected it.

Mornington Environment Association Inc. opposed the Club's second, similar proposal, which a municipal council vote officially rejected on 2012-02-21.
